Numerical Simulation of 2D Flow in Butterfly Control Valves

Abstract

The fluid flow in a butterfly control valve is a topic of great relevance to the valve manufacturing industry. This work presents a two-dimensional simulation of fluid flow in butterfly control valves. Using only open-source software, such as GMSH for mesh generation, Python for programming, and Paraview for visualization, a computational tool was developed based on the governing equations of fluid mechanics, including the Navier-Stokes equation. The finite element method (FEM) was employed for the numerical solution of this problem. The Semi-Lagrangian method was also applied to address spurious oscillations caused by the convective term of the Navier-Stokes equation in cases with high Reynolds numbers. The tool was verified through comparisons with well-known cases from the literature. After verification, the flow in several butterfly valve profiles was simulated. The results of the simulations were quite satisfactory, comparing qualitatively with the simulations cited in the references. vii Sumário Sumário
