Numerical Analysis of Biofuels Flow in a Porous Medium

Abstract

The environmental degradation resulting from the use of fossil fuels on the planet has created the need for alternative and sustainable fuels. In this sense, biofuel emerges as an excellent option, as its combustion generates fewer pollutants and greenhouse gases. Therefore, the use of computational tools to predict and optimize the behavior of such fluid flow becomes crucial to ensure its future viability. This study aims to analyze the two-dimensional flow of biofuels through a channel with a porous medium section inside, using the finite element method (FEM). The fluid flow domain was modeled using the stream-vorticity formulation, and within the porous medium domain, the fluid velocity is given by the Brinkman-Forchheimer equation. To perform the numerical analysis, a Python code was developed. Finally, it was observed that both the width and thickness of the porous medium influence the obtained results
