Numerical Simulator for Heat Exchangers and Thermal Design of an Aeronautical Fuel-Cooled Oil Cooler

Abstract

CERQUEIRA JÚNIOR, J. R. da S. Numerical simulator for heat exchangers and thermal design of an aeronautical Fuel Cooled Oil Cooler . 102 f. Trabalho de conclusão de curso (Graduação em Engenharia Mecânica) - Faculdade de Engenharia, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Rio de Janeiro, 2018. In this work, heat exchangers are divided in discrete elements and an energy balance was used to simulate the thermal behaviour of fluids along the length of the device. The target is to design a numerical simulator to aid the design of different kinds of heat exchangers. Python programming language was used to simulate some of most common configurations of heat exchangers like, double pipe heat exchanger, shell and tube heat exchanger, plate heat exchanger and cross flow finned tube heat exchangers. Parameters like temperature, head loss, pressure drop, and mechanical power along the extension of exchanger were calculated. Some problems were solved analytically to compare with the results offered by the code. The code were used to simulate a heat exchanger whose application is in the warming of fuel and the cooling of oil in jet propelled aircraft
