Design and Construction of a Low-Cost Subsonic Wind Tunnel

Abstract

Course: Mechanical Engineering Wind tunnels are essential tools for studying the aerodynamic behavior of objects interacting with airflow, playing a crucial role in the development of new technologies. However, commercial wind tunnels have large dimensions and high costs, making them an unfeasible option for small-scale research. This study developed the design of a low-cost subsonic wind tunnel aimed at academic purposes, making small-scale studies in wind tunnels viable and accessible. The goal was to size each component of the wind tunnel, including the fan, and calculate all system pressure losses, based on the provided design specifications. The calculations were performed using spreadsheets developed in Microsoft Excel, while the component drawings and conceptual design were created using SolidWorks. The design process was followed by the physical construction of the wind tunnel using accessible materials. The results showed consistency with expectations, meeting the requirements for the aerodynamic applications outlined in the project. This work significantly contributes to the accessible development of aerodynamic studies in education and research
