Abstract

This work presents a numerical analysis of the two-dimensional flow around the profile of a Riachuelo-class submarine, taking as reference a representative geometry of interest to the Brazilian Navy. The mathematical model is based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, solved using the finite element method, with the non-linear convective term handled by a first-order semi-Lagrangian scheme. The simulations were carried out with code developed at LabMFA/COPPE-UFRJ in collaboration with the Naval School. Based on the numerical results, wake formation, vortex shedding, and the distribution of hydrodynamic loads acting on the body is investigate, with emphasis o n drag and lift forces. The analysis allows the identification of critical regions associated with flow separation, recirculation, and pressure variations that directly influence hydrodynamic performance. Such phenomena are related to increased drag, force fluctuations, and the intensification of flow-induced noise sources. The results provide support for performance studies, geometric optimization, and reduction of the hydrodynamic signature in military and naval engineering applications.
